Picton Botanic Gardens Playground

Construction to Start Late January 2024

Thank you to everyone who took part in consultation for the Botanic Gardens inclusive playground and amenities upgrade.

The final concept design responds to community ideas and works well with the unique features of the site.

What We Heard

In the initial questionnaire the community’s top five play elements were:

  • Climbing
  • Slides
  • Swings
  • Water play
  • Nature play

We have included all of these within the new playground, and our final concept design is focused on showing where the play areas will go and how they are connected. Main areas will include a children’s playspace with a unique play feature, a toddler’s placespace, and a boardwalk link between the two – incorporating sensory elements and water play. See our Engagement Snapshots for more information about what we heard from the community in two rounds of consultation.

Amenities Upgrade

We received some valuable feedback on accessible amenities and now have a concept design for a new accessible amenities building. As well, space has been allocated to accommodate a future extension with adult changing facilities.

Background

The extension and upgrade of the playground and the upgrade of the amenities building were identified as high priority projects during consultation for the Picton Parklands. The Parklands is a large area of recreational and open space in Picton, which includes the Botanic Gardens, Hume Oval Sportsground, Picton Sportsground (Fairley's Road), Picton RSL Park, Monds Lane Precinct, and the Stonequarry Creek and Racecourse Creek area. The Picton Parklands Masterplan was adopted by Wollondilly Shire Council in August 2022 after multiple rounds of community consultation over a two year period.

Funding for upgrades to the playground and amenities has been jointly provided by Commonwealth and the New South Wales Government under the Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements and the Public Spaces Legacy Program, and Wollondilly Shire Council.

An Inclusive Playground

As outlined in Council's Disability Inclusion Action Plan 2022-2026 (DIAP), we will be incorporating universal design principles for the development of the playground concepts, which means we are designing the playground for everyone. Picton Botanic Gardens was identified in the DIAP as an outdoor place requiring improved accessibility.

Next Steps

We anticipate construction to begin in late January 2024. During the construction phase there will be limited access to the area, including the car park.
