Draft Scenic and Cultural Landscapes Strategy

Have your say on the draft Scenic and Cultural Landscapes Strategy to help to set a framework to manage Wollondilly's landscapes that have scenic and cultural significance over the next 20 years.


Wollondilly's landscapes and its scenic values have long been recognised as one of the area's distinguishing features and key strengths. From the spectacular natural backdrop of National Parks and other protected lands, as well as the complex patchwork of agriculture, rural landscapes, bushland and distinct towns and villages.

The draft Scenic and Cultural Landscapes Strategy provides an analysis and mapping of Wollondilly's landscapes and considers what;

  • makes the different landscapes in Wollondilly unique,
  • is worthy of protection,
  • are the emerging pressures and opportunities for scenic and cultural landscapes, and
  • opportunities there are to protect and enhance scenic landscapes through land use planning.

The focus of the Strategy is on scenic landscapes. The draft Strategy also considers cultural landscapes to inform a more comprehensive future study.

Recommended actions within the draft Strategy are including under the following strategic aims:

  • Conserve, maintain and enhance landscape characteristics and values.
  • Protect and manage highly sensitive landscapes.
  • Protect important vistas and view corridors.
  • Enhance views and provide additional opportunities for the enjoyment of views by the public.


Land Included in the Study Area

The draft strategy focuses on the populated eastern half of the Wollondilly local government area (i.e. generally land not located within a protected natural area such as a National Park).


Status of Draft Strategy

Council has endorsed the Draft Scenic and Cultural Lands Strategy for consultation purposes only. It does not yet represent Council policy. Community and stakeholder feedback will inform the final strategy.
