  • Will new developments have backyards big enough to plant fruit and vegetables, and plants to mitigate heat so that residents may be more resilient to climate change?

Malle asked over 3 years ago

Council endeavours to ensure that our planning policies provide suitable controls to protect the character and amenity of our neighbourhoods and ensure we are more resilient to climatic changes.  Ultimately the design and usage of rear yards within our residential neighbourhoods are generally dependent on the needs of the homeowners.

The Draft Urban Tree Canopy Plan & Landscape Strategy is a high-level document that focuses on establishing tree canopy coverage targets.  These targets can be achieved in several ways including trees within the road reserves (along the footpath verge) and within our open space areas such as parks and reserves.  It also considers the planting of trees within the front and rear yards of residential properties.

The Draft Urban Tree Canopy Plan & Landscape Strategy recommends that a review of the Wollondilly Development Control Plan 2016 (WDCP) and other relevant documents/guidelines be undertaken to support tree canopy coverage targets. Once this strategy is adopted, a review of relevant tree canopy protection and enhancement provisions within the WDCP and other relevant documents/guidelines will commence exploring the various opportunities to achieve higher tree canopy coverage, including planting in residential backyards.
