Artificial Intelligence - Ethical Use Policy

Ensuring Ethics, Transparency and Safety

As Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools become more and more prevalent, it’s important to have user-friendly guidelines and guardrails in place to ensure AI is used ethically and appropriately in our workplace.

Council has developed our first draft Artificial Intelligence (AI) Ethical Use Policy, in response to the growing use of publicly available AI tools such as ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Copilot by staff, contractors and elected officials. The draft Policy is currently on Public Exhibition, and we are inviting feedback.

An Outline of the Policy

The Policy’s purpose is to ensure that AI use within Council is ethical, transparent, safe, and aligns with Council’s values, legislative obligations, and community expectations.

The draft Policy outlines:

  • Guiding Principles
  • Risk categories
  • A practical guide for AI use
  • Core responsibilities
  • Governance and oversight
  • Policy breaches
  • Review and adaptability
  • Roles and responsibility
  • Risk assessment
  • Definitions
