Who is the Youth Zone for?

During the community consultation activities that occurred when we were creating the Master Plan for Telopea Park in 2019 to 2020, some of the suggestions were that Buxton needed a space specifically for young people.

This space within Telopea Park was identified for a dedicated youth zone that will provide recreation opportunities for young people who might be too old for the current children’s playground equipment but too young to independently visit facilities elsewhere. For example, ages 9-16 years.

Is the size of the Youth Zone restricted?

We are limited in the size of the area that is available for the youth zone because the park provides for a number of different activities that cater for the wider community. During our previous consultation activities, you told us that it was important to keep the open green lawn space for activities such as kicking a ball around/informal sporting games and community events (e.g. Christmas Carols, markets).

    What about a BMX track?

While we recognise the value a BMX track would have, we are limited in the space that is available for the youth zone at Telopea Park noting the community provided a lot of feedback previously which led to the adopted overall Master Plan. This feedback included you telling us the importance of keeping the open green lawn space for informal sports and events.

Unfortunately there is a lack of Council-owned land in Buxton, and Telopea Park plays a significant role in providing something for everyone within the Buxton community, which is a balancing act. At this point in time, the nearest BMX track is located at Tahmoor Sportsground and we are also in the early stages of providing one at Bargo Sportsground.

What about suggestions for other features in the rest of Telopea Park?

We understand you may have other suggestions for the park (e.g. off leash dog park, tennis courts etc.) however we have an adopted Master Plan that was developed following a lot of community consultation that occurred from late 2018 through to mid-2020. Led by the community feedback, the Master Plan is the adopted vision for the site which guides what we deliver at Telopea Park over the coming years and enables us to secure funding. This Master Plan was considered by and adopted by the elected Council.

Having the Master Plan in place has already enabled us to secure both Council and grant funding that has completed:

    • Renewal of the public amenities
    • Installation of outdoor exercise equipment
    • Renewal of the previous children’s playground
    • Installation of a RFS Fire Truck Memorial Playground
    • Installation of a new barbecue
    • Renewal of park furniture
    • Construction of some pathways
    • Renewal of the perimeter fencing

How will the Youth Zone be funded?

Following the Green Wattle Creek Bushfire events that affected our Shire in late 2019, Council was granted funds from the Federal Government’s Recovery Grant. This project is being funded through this grant.

When will it be ready to use?

It's ready to use now! We began construction earlier in 2022, and has been open for use since late July 2022.

Will there be plants and trees and more shade?

Yes, we will be pursuing shade options which include trees and/or shade structures.

What is the purpose of the screens?

The idea of the screens is simply to provide a buffer between the skateboarding/scooter activities and the pedestrians using the pathway that surrounds the youth zone, as well as creating a buffer between the ball games being undertaken on the half court and the skate/scooter area. The screens will be designed in a way to try and maximise the visual sight lines throughout the space.
