Why are the wards changing from three to two?

A constitutional referendum was held in conjunction with the 2016 Council elections to determine if Wollondilly wants a Popularly Elected Mayor and reduce the number of wards. Over 65% of voters voted YES in the referendum. At the 2020 Council elections, voters will be voting for Councillors in two wards.

When will the wards change from three to two?

The wards will come into effect from the 2020 Council elections. Wollondilly Shire Council is required to have the new wards finalised before the 2020 Council elections.

How did Council determine the new wards?

Wollondilly Shire Council used electoral numbers from the Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) and Standard Statistical Areas (SA1) from the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) to determine the new wards. In accordance with Sections 210, 210A and 211 of the Local Government Act 1993, wards must not have a variance of more than 10% in electors between the wards. Wollondilly Shire Council also considered future growth trends in the local government area when determining the boundaries.

Who are the Councillors for the wards?

Councillors for the two wards will not be elected until the 2020 Council elections. There will be four Councillors per ward, plus a Popularly Elected Mayor in 2020 and beyond.

Why do I need to know this?

Voters need to be aware of which ward they will be in, as they will be voting for the Councillors to represent them from 2020 and beyond.
