Criteria
- Cannot be duplicated with another name in Australia.
- Cannot sound similar to another name.
- Must be standard Australian English or a recognised format of the Australian Aboriginal language in the area.
- Must be easy to pronounce, spell and write and not exceed three words. The exception is to Aboriginal names.
- Must not have abbreviations, initials or acronyms.
- Must not include Arabic numerals, e.g. Roman numerals (IV, X etc.).
- Cannot use the following punctuation and diacritical marks:
- Period (.)
- Comma (,)
- Colon (:) and semi-colon (;)
- Quotation marks (“ “)
- Exclamation mark (!) and question mark (?)
- Ellipsis (…)
- Hyphen (-)
- Solidus (/)
- Parenthesis ( () )
- Diacritical marks (symbols such as ´ in é, ¸ in ç or : in ö)
- Cannot use apostrophe marks.
- Cannot use “the” as the sole name element of a place name, e.g. The Reserve.
- Cannot include a preposition, e.g. Avenue of the Allies.
- Names starting with Mc or Mac will not have a space between the Mc and Mac and the rest of the name, e.g. McMillan, not Mc Millan.
- If the name commemorates a person, the person must:
- Be deceased,
- Have made a significant contribution to the community, e.g. two or more terms in office on the governing local council, twenty or more years association with a local community group or service club, twenty or more years of association or service with a local or state government or organisation, or protected, restored, enhanced or maintained an area that produces/produced long term improvements for the community.
