We asked the community what great names they could suggest to pay homage to our local history and heritage – and received some great suggestions.
The aim was to find a suitable name for a new suburb in the Wilton Growth Area, and create a list of eligible names to be available for streets and parks.
Thank you to everyone who participated – we received 103 unique names. As well, key feedback from the community was to retain ‘Wilton’ as an overarching and unifying name.
At its meeting August 2023, Council resolved not to proceed with naming a new suburb, instead committing to keep Wilton as the name for the Town Centre and the broader growth area. We now have a list of names to draw on for streets and parks in the Wilton Growth Area.
Suggested names could relate to:
Geography
Local heritage
Aboriginal naming
Early explorers
Commemorating a person, event or place
For commemorative names, the person needed to have contributed significantly to the area. All submissions must follow the criteria and guidelines provided by the Geographical Names Board of NSW (GNB).
Staff reviewed the names received against the criteria and the appropriateness for the area, narrowing it down to a shortlist which was reported to Council for consideration.
