Trees are vital for current and future generations – giving us oxygen and shade, providing habitat for wildlife, and adding character to streetscapes.
To help us manage trees within Wollondilly Shire, Council has a Tree Management Policy. We are currently inviting feedback about the latest revised version, which includes updates and some new sections about our Significant Tree Register, and bushfire hazard risk information.
An Overview
The existing Policy was adopted in 2020. It outlines how Council determines matters relating to trees on public and private property - outside of any planning framework. The Policy is now due for review. The intent and much of the content remains unchanged, although it has been reformatted to improve readability and flow. Two new topics have also been introduced to address previously unaddressed matters:
Significant Tree Register
Bushfire Hazard Risk Information.
The Objectives
The main objectives of the draft revised policy include:
Maximising the preservation, protection and maintenance of trees, especially those with environmental, heritage, social and cultural significance through the new Significant Tree Register*
Protecting and conserving important biodiversity and wildlife corridors
Recognising the importance of tree canopy throughout the Shire
Providing clarity about where to source information about managing trees in a bushfire risk context.
* Note: The Significant Tree Register itself is separate, and will be finalised and made live once the Tree Management Policy has been adopted by Council.
