Wollondilly Shire Council has voted to adopt an amended Master Plan for Thirlmere Memorial Park and Thirlmere Sportsground.
Input from stakeholders and the community helped shape the vision, principles, and design options for these two sites. The vision is to create an active and vibrant green spine that unites the heart of Thirlmere Village and provides for the social and recreational needs of the community. It is supported by four principles:
Enhance the open spaces along Oaks Street to create a continuous and vibrant spine through the heart of Thirlmere village
Celebrate what makes each site unique and maintain the village character
Optimise the use of space across both sites for maximum community benefit
Improve accessibility and inclusion across and between the sites.
Two rounds of community engagement with user groups and community members helped to identify the priorities, aspirations, and preferred design options for both Memorial Park and the Sportsground. Thank you to everyone who participated – whether by dropping a pin and sharing your big ideas on our online map, having a chat at one of the pop-up kiosks, sharing your thoughts using the feedback form, calling, or emailing. Please see the ‘What We Heard’ documents for more detail.
Council voted to adopt the Master Plan with several amendments, including retaining the existing tennis courts in their current location.
Benefits of a Master Plan
The Master Plan sets the vision for the next 10 years, enabling Council to apply for grants and allocate funding to undertake upgrades in a planned and co-ordinated manner. Please note that master plans address the ‘big picture’, and focus on the big opportunities and overall structure of each site. Details about exact activities and playground equipment are considered in later design stages.
Memorial Park – The Heart of Thirlmere
Memorial Park is highly valued and considered the ‘heart of Thirlmere’ by the community for a variety of reasons. Three options for the Memorial Park were developed, which offered a range of scenarios including retaining, re-configuring or relocating the tennis courts. Opportunities to improve connections for pedestrians between the park, shops and rail museum were also identified, as well as upgrades to the Oaks Street parking areas.
Thirlmere Sportsground – Revitalising Oaks Street
The design for Thirlmere Sportsground seeks to activate as much of the site as possible. In particular, in line with the Master Plan's vision and principles, a key focus is on revitalising the village and creating more activation along Oaks Street.
