Wollondilly Shire Council now has a Master Plan to guide upgrades and investment for Bargo Sportsground!
Bargo Sportsground provides multiple sport and recreation opportunities for the local community. Having a master plan in place will now help maximise these opportunities and allow us to get the most out of this great location.
We engaged sport and recreation consultants Otium Planning Group to assist in preparing the Master Plan. After a first phase of community engagement, we developed a draft Master Plan based on feedback received from the community, key user groups and local Aboriginal groups. Following the Public Exhibition of the draft Master Plan, feedback was reported back to the elected Council, and the master Plan was adopted in August 2025.
Previous Consultation and Research
We began the project using the previous community and stakeholder consultation about sport and recreation needs across the Shire and prepared an initial concept plan. This gave us more insight into the sentiment in Bargo, around the community’s aspirations and vision for local sport and recreation. Best practice examples and research into the local context are also factoring into the planning process.
An Overview
Phase 1 Engagement provided a concept layout plan to initiate discussions with the community and stakeholders. Feedback received from the first phase of community consultation was reviewed and helped inform a draft Master Plan was placed on public exhibition.
Phase 2 Engagement through the Public Exhibition process allowed us to check back in with the community to see if we got the plan right.
Key aspects of the Master Plan include:
Reorientation of sports fields.
Separating the cricket wicket from the football field area of play.
Relocating the tennis courts to the front of the site to address the issues experienced with trees, drainage and passive surveillance.
Increased formal parking options.
Established clear vehicle movements throughout the site and opening up vehicle exit off Kader Street (also helping to improve pedestrian safety throughout the site).
Removal of the redundant trotting track and equestrian facilities.
Repositioning the children’s playground further from the car parking an entrance road for improved safety – yet still adjacent to the amenities.
Enhancing the youth activity offerings by way of upgraded and expanded skate park, pump track and multi-court with rebound wall.
Consolidation of some of the buildings.
Identifying a new multipurpose sports building that is positioned central to the football field centre line and providing new amenities/change rooms etc within in the proposed new facility.
Creation of a shared pedestrian/bicycle path/loop through the site.
Improvements to the Bargo Community Hall, envisioning it as a central hub to cater to the diverse needs of all clubs and the wider community including an extension for Scouts activities.
Establishment of a short stay RV site within the space (as per a previous Council resolution).
Inclusion of a location within the site to accommodate a future Bargo Men’s Shed facility.
Bargo Sportsground Master Plan suggests some changes to enhance the way formal sport is provided at this location, and further promote other recreational pursuits at the sportsground. This will help to activate this important community asset for a variety of ages and interests.
Implementation
With the Master Plan now adopted, implementation will be subject to funding availability over time.
