Future Use of Old Razorback Road

Open to Two-way Traffic

Wollondilly Council has determined that Old Razorback Road will remain open to two-way traffic, at their meeting in September 2023.

Council also resolved to install highly visible signage to warn motorists about the conditions of the road, and to investigate opportunities for grant funding to improve road safety on the bend about one kilometre south of Cawdor Road.

Understanding Community Sentiment

Earlier in 2023 we invited community feedback about proposed options to improve the safety of the road.

Many safety improvements commonly observed on other roads, such as guardrails, centre-lines, and other line-marking, are not feasible in the narrowest section of Old Razorback Road if it carries two-way traffic. Unfortunately, the steepness of surrounding terrain makes it cost prohibitive to widen or upgrade the road.

Given the road’s physical constraints, Council proposed three options which would reduce risk of accidents and improve safety by eliminating oncoming vehicles or reducing the amount of traffic on the road:

  • One-way traffic flow throughout
  • Partial one-way, partial two-way traffic flow
  • Close the road permanently.

Key Findings

  • Community consultation provided valuable insight into local sentiment, with a high level of local interest and participation.
  • Feedback revealed diverse perspectives, and we have gained a clearer understanding of the community’s usage and expectations regarding the road.
  • The majority of respondents acknowledged there were safety issues with the road, but there was limited support for the three proposed options.
  • The emerging message was that Council should consider other options to improve the safety of the road, without making substantial changes that would affect functionality.

Council considered the item at the September 2023 meeting and determined the road should remain open to two-way traffic.
