Reducing Risks to Wildlife
Wollondilly Shire Council is inviting feedback on our Draft Wildlife Protection Areas and Feral Animal Management Policy.
The draft Wildlife Protection Areas and Feral Animal Management Policy establishes the process for declaring Wildlife Protection Areas. Declaration of lands, such as public reserves is a key tool used by councils across the state to manage and protect the environmental value of public land that's vulnerable to the impacts of domestic dogs and cats.
The proposed management of these lands is based on a declaration of a particular site as Category 2 land under the NSW Companion Animals Act 1998. This categorisation enables Council to prohibit dogs (unless on leash) and straying cats from these public places, with the aim of lowering the risks to wildlife.
Two proposed changes are the inclusion of two new sites (Gundungurra Park in Belimbla Park, and Bargo River Reserve in Tahmoor), and a provision for the management of feral and abandoned very young companion animals across the Shire.
The existing Wildlife Protection Areas Policy was adopted in 2018. The draft policy updates the existing framework and reflects legislative changes and current management practices.
