Draft Weeds (Biosecurity) Strategy 2026-2030

Now on Public Exhibition - Open for Feedback

Biosecurity protects our economy, environment and community from the impacts of pests, diseases, contaminants and weeds.

Wollondilly Shire Council is currently inviting feedback on our draft Weeds (Biosecurity) Strategy 2026 - 2030.

This aim of Council's strategy is to work locally towards the targets set out in the policies, frameworks, and plans at the local, state, and federal levels; key reference points being the NSW Biosecurity Strategy and NSW Invasive Species Plan.

The NSW Biosecurity Strategy sets out how government, industry and the community work together to identify, prevent, eradicate, minimise and manage biosecurity risks.

For Wollondilly, the key themes are:

  • Prepare and prevent
  • Timely, risk‑based responses
  • Rapid and efficient containment
  • Partnerships to reduce impacts
  • Capacity building and ongoing community education.

The NSW Invasive Species Plan has four goals aimed at preventing new incursions, eliminating or containing emerging species, and effectively managing widespread invasive plants, including priority and environmental weeds.

Goal 1: Exclude
Prevent new invasive species from establishing (e.g., inspections of high‑risk sites such as nurseries)

Goal 2: Eradicate or Contain
Eliminate new invasive species or stop their spread (e.g., immediate treatment of new detections).

Goal 3: Effectively Manage
Reduce the impacts of widespread invasive species (protect key assets).

Goal 4: Capacity Building
Ensure NSW has the capability and commitment needed to manage invasive species (training and education).

The actions in Wollondilly's draft Weeds (Biosecurity) Strategy move us towards these goals.
