Why have a sustainability or net zero strategy?

We know that sustainability is important to our community.

Community consultation undertaken for the Sustainability Policy in 2022 showed the community expects Council to speed up the delivery sustainability outcomes.

And the community rated Environment as a high priority in our most recent community satisfaction survey.

What is the purpose of these strategies?

In line with Council’s Sustainability Policy, the Sustainability and Net Zero Strategies:

    • Provide a framework for Council to lead by example
    • Integrate sustainability into its culture
    • Help achieve a more sustainable community within Wollondilly.

What is the aim of these strategies?

The draft Sustainability Strategy has four pillars; environmental, social, economic and governance. The intent is to outline Council’s direction, actions and targets for greater sustainability in our services, operations and management practices across the four pillars.

The intent of the Net Zero Strategy is to focus on Council’s operations and provide actions to prioritise and advance its efforts to achieve net zero emissions.

    What does 'net zero' mean?

'Net zero emissions' means reducing greenhouse gas emissions to as close to zero as possible with available technology, and offsetting any remaining emissions through carbon sequestration (storing) projects or investment in renewable energy projects.

What was the basis for Council’s Net Zero Target?

Council has chosen to align with the NSW Government’s net zero target for 2050 for its organisational emissions. The first step towards net zero is to identify and prioritise the highest emitting areas of Council operations.

What are the local benefits of the draft Net Zero Strategy?

Projects we've identified target emissions reduction, and also return on investment. This means long term cost savings for Council and the community.
