Draft Greater Macarthur Health & Wellbeing Strategy
Now on Public Exhibition
Health and wellbeing within communities can be enhanced by factoring health and wellbeing into planning policies and strategies.
Council identified the need for a health and wellbeing strategy in response to the State Government’s rezoning of Greater Macarthur, including the Appin area, for urban development.
We now have a draft Greater Macarthur Health and Wellbeing Strategy which outlines how Council can influence the delivery of positive health and wellbeing outcomes for Appin's current and future residents. We are currently inviting community feedback on the draft Strategy, and we are inviting Appin residents to complete a quick questionnaire about health and wellbeing in their community.
An Overview
The draft Strategy describes the type of infrastructure needed to support a healthy lifestyle in the growing community of Appin. It recommends 16 actions for Council, State Government and developers, based on eight (8) focus areas:
- Equity
- Social connectedness
- Employment and income
- Access to health care
- Access to nature and open space
- Education
- Access to healthy food
- Active transport.
Embedding Health and Wellbeing in Development Plans
The importance of planning for health and wellbeing is recognised by the NSW Government, but implementation is yet to be enforced through State legislation and regulations. The draft Strategy helps address this gap in planning - Council is advocating for health and wellbeing to be embedded in future development plans for Greater Macarthur.
The Local Context
Appin is expected to grow by 20,000 new homes to accommodate approximately 68,900 people. Appin Part Precinct 1 has already been rezoned by the Department of Planning, Housing and Infrastructure (DPHI) and has the potential to deliver 12,900 of these new homes. North Appin is midway through the rezoning process and is expected to deliver approximately 3,000 new homes. Interest in planning proposals for new homes in Appin is increasing, and this draft Strategy will be a guiding document for any proposal to consider and address.
The draft Greater Macarthur Health and Wellbeing Strategy identifies the infrastructure challenges and opportunities the community faces with regard to making choices related to health and active lifestyles, as well as accessing services and spaces that encourage wellbeing and connectedness. With the growing population likely to be more culturally diverse and having a younger age profile, recognising the unique experiences and needs of these groups will help ensure a healthy place for everyone.
Council sees development at Appin as a long-term prospect and will continue to advocate for Wilton as the priority growth area. More information about Council's position is available on our website.
