Our Draft Domestic Waste Services Policy is intended to consolidate and formalise Council's current waste services, service standards, operational principles, and customer entitlements into a single user-friendly document.
The Policy has been developed following a review of Council’s existing waste management framework; formalising the waste collection services currently delivered under Council's new waste collection contract, and brings together existing waste-related policies and service requirements - helping to ensure consistent and transparent service delivery.
We’re seeking your feedback on the policy contents, including our approach to achieving low contamination levels to keep waste services efficient and cost-effective for our community.
The draft Policy includes:
Domestic waste management services
Council obligations
Contaminated and prohibited waste
Service eligibility
Fees and charges
New developments.
Fit for the Future
We've been listening to our community's priorities, with previous consultation identifying key themes such as:
Support for initiatives that improve the collection and sorting of waste, and reduce the volume of waste sent to landfill
Concern regarding contamination of recycling and organics services, and the financial impacts contamination has on the broader community
A desire for stronger education and awareness regarding correct waste disposal practices and available waste services which support environmental protection
Recognition that effective waste management is a shared responsibility between Council, service providers, and the community
Support for continual improvement in waste recovery and resource recovery outcomes.
These themes have directly influenced the development of this draft Policy, and are reflected through:
Stronger provisions for residents to manage contamination and prohibited waste
A target of 3% or less contamination in recycling and organics bins to support improved resource recovery outcomes and reduce financial implications to ratepayers
Clearer responsibilities for Council, contractors and residents
More detailed information about service standards, service eligibility and collection requirements
A stronger focus on waste reduction, recycling and environmental sustainability.
