Community feedback for options to improve safety at the Barkers Lodge Road intersection has been assessed with a compact roundabout selected as the preferred option.
Due to increased traffic congestion driven by population growth in Wollondilly, the Picton Town Centre Transport Plan 2026 includes a focus on improving safety at the Barkers Lodge Road and Argyle Street intersection.
As part of the planning process, community engagement was conducted to understand local sentiment about the intersection. Two improvement options were presented:
A compact roundabout
Traffic lights
The consultation period was open from 14 May to 22 June with pop-up kiosks including:
George IV Inn – 22 May
The Oaks Community Hall – 3 June
Picton Mall – 14 June
Feedback revealed that the community is strongly in favour of an intersection upgrade, with overwhelming support for exploring alternatives that will improve both movement and safety at this busy intersection.
The overall preferred option in the community engagement was for the compact roundabout.
Council Engineers and consultants carefully considered the options using technical assessment to guide their outcomes. They concluded that the compact roundabout was technically a better intersection configuration than traffic lights. With community and technical input assessed, Councillors were briefed and agreed for detailed designs to be prepared for a compact roundabout at the intersection.
