We are seeking feedback about your everyday experiences of Barkers Lodge Road and Argyle Street intersection in Picton, so we can find the most suitable option to improve safety and traffic movement.

Picton Town Centre experiences traffic congestion in a few key locations, which is forecast to worsen. Council adopted the Picton Town Centre Transport Plan 2026 to identify the traffic points requiring investigation for improvements. The Plan identifies the intersection of Barkers Lodge Road and Argyle Street as a location requiring investigation.

So far, other projects identified in the Plan that have already been completed include:

  • Pedestrian and cyclist connection to Picton Sportsground
  • Pedestrian crossing moved and upgraded on Argyle Street
  • Redirection of traffic heading towards Camden from Menangle Street - along Colden Street and Margaret Street instead of turning right onto Argyle Street
  • Pedestrian and cycling improvements on Prince Street Bridge.

Intersection Options

In this initial phase of engagement, we are seeking insights and community sentiment around the two traffic options: a compact roundabout or traffic lights. These are designed to improve pedestrian and driver safety, traffic flow, and provide clearer lines of sight. Each option has benefits and challenges - there are several factors for consideration and we are interested to learn about the community's experiences of using this intersection.

Compact Roundabout

The compact roundabout option will include a low roundabout that trucks and buses can drive over, along with pedestrian crossings.

Benefits

Challenges

Lower construction cost

Moderate construction – more complex than traffic lights

Keeps traffic flowing

Construction takes longer, so longer impact on traffic

Safe for vehicle movement

Heavy vehicle manoeuvring (e.g. right turns) less smooth than traffic lights

Traffic Lights

The traffic lights option will include a dedicated turning lane into Barkers Lodge Road (from either direction on Argyle Street) and separate left and right turning lanes from Barkers Lodge Road onto Argyle Street. Signalised pedestrian crossings will be included.

Benefits

Challenges

Simple construction / less time so lower impact on businesses and drivers

Stops traffic flow

Safe for pedestrians and cyclists

Restricts access to Crakanthorp Lane

Higher construction cost
