We have an opportunity to guide the future of Appin town centre.

The focus is on ensuring it is enjoyable to visit, easy to move around, supportive of local businesses, and keeps some of its village feel.

Wollondilly Shire Council, with assistance from design consultants at ARTSCAPE, will be preparing the Appin Place Plan, using a place-making approach. Place-making is a community-focused process that helps create and sustain public spaces that are vibrant, healthy, and safe. This is the aim of the Appin Place Plan; to guide the streetscapes and connections in Appin town centre as they evolve, ensuring it’s easy to move around and enjoyable to visit.

Building on what we’ve heard in previous consultations, we are inviting input from local businesses, groups, and community members. Your input will help shape Appin, especially the town centre, into the future.


The Focus

The Appin Place Plan will be focused on the mixed-use retail area and extend to existing low-density residential zones for things like pedestrian connectivity, places to gather, traffic movement, green corridors, and more.

Key considerations include:

  • Safety, comfort and everyday use
  • Enjoying visiting, meeting up, socialising
  • Supporting diverse local businesses to thrive
  • Improving the way people move around, and how places link together.


Background and Context

Appin is an historical township, and forms part of the Greater Macarthur 2040 planned growth area.

The project to create a place plan focuses on the existing township, and will also consider the existing bushland and the land identified by the NSW Government for future growth – and their connections to the existing community.

The area has already seen an increase in population; with the broader area set to transition from rural and agricultural land to residential in the future. While growth is largely focused on low-density housing, it also requires the coordinated provision of commercial centres, and needs to ensure employment opportunities, open space, transport networks, and community infrastructure.

This is where a Place Plan can provide useful guidance. The Appin Place Plan will provide a strategic, place-based framework to guide future growth and land use.

Wollondilly Shire Council’s key strategic documents recognise local community priorities and values, and outline the need for place plans.

  • Wollondilly 2040 – Local Strategic Planning Statement (2019) acknowledges Appin’s needs and values.
  • Wollondilly 2040 – Community Strategic Plan (2024) outlines key goals and relevant focus areas for looking after Place and Landscape.
